Bosch invests 700m yuan in R&D in Changsha

Date: 2012-10-12

Bosch, the leading global supplier of technology and services, announced on Friday the opening of a new research and development center and a new production plant of Bosch Automotive Products (Changsha) Co Ltd.

By expanding the R&D center and establishing the new plant, the strategic investment, totaling 700 million yuan, aims to further improve the R&D and production capacity of Bosch's automotive divisions including Starter Motors and Generators and Electrical Drives, whose product range covers starter motors, generators, thermal systems, wiper systems and actuation systems.

The new plant will also help double the production capacity of Bosch's Changsha company.

"With close cooperation between the new plant and the new R&D center, there will be a prompt application of Bosch's latest R&D outcome to the products, so that customers' growing demand for localized and tailored solutions will be met," said Ferdinando Sorrentino, regional president of Bosch Electrical Drives Division Asia-Pacific and general manager of Bosch Automotive Products (Changsha) Co Ltd.

"Over 30 different tests are allocated to efficiently collaborate and optimize starter motors and generators," said Sorrentino.

Meanwhile, he also said that for the energy saving goals of Chinese automotive industry, the start/stop system will become one of the development focuses in Changsha and over one-third R&D capabilities will be allocated to its localization development.

The system is specially designed for urban traffic and is capable of reducing the fuel consumption by up to 8 percent. The company forecast that by 2017, more than 20 percent of newly registered vehicles will be equipped with the start/stop system.

Moreover, electrical drive technologies are also in the scope of the center.

Many localized products are being developed the company's R&D centers in Changsha and Shanghai, with investment in them set to increase at a double-digit rate over the next five years. "Given the booming of the auto market in cities across China and continuous upgrading of the auto industry, the auto parts segment will keep pace with steady growth in the long term and focus on more advanced and tailor-made solutions," said Sun Guozhong, regional president of Bosch Starter Motors and Generators Division China.

"As the latest investment in this major city of the central and western region, the expansion of this production base is an upfront step that goes in line with the government agenda of accelerating western region's development," he said.

"Not only will our strengthened R&D capabilities and improved production capacities fulfill market demand, the investment also demonstrates Bosch's continuous commitment to the development of the central and western region and the whole Chinese economy," said Sun.
